DATMET (2024-2026)

Building the national information base and methodology on socioeconomic evaluation of measures for obstacles on the Latvian rivers.

The study is conducted as part of a project “Implementation of data collection studies and development of a national methodology for socioeconomic evaluation of measures to reduce pressures from obstacles on rivers and for justifying cost-effective measures” (DATMET). It is implemented by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC) together with AKTiiVS, with funding from the Latvian Environment Protection Fund.

Project number: 1-08/65/2024.

Funded by: Latvian Environment Protection Fund.

Project implementation time: 10.2024-09.2026.

The study will fill substantial national data gaps on societal benefits and costs of obstacles on rivers and their management in Latvia, and will provide national methodology and assessments for socioeconomic evaluation and setting cost-effective measures to reduce the pressures, created by the obstacles on river ecosystems. The project’s results will contribute to updating the national River Basin Management Plans, which plan to be prepared in 2026.

AKTiiVS is contracted by the LEGMC for:

  • development of a national methodology for socioeconomic impact assessment of measures to reduce the pressures caused by river obstacles and justifying cost-effective measures;
  • conducting a national data collection and monetary valuation study on the societal benefits of water related recreation and improving quality of river ecosystems;
  • conducting a national data collection and monetary valuation study on the societal benefits of angling and the welfare impacts of implementing measures to improve rivers affected by the obstacles.
